E3 -HYPE WORLD- III

NINTENDO REVOLUTIONS

Nintendo Co. Ltd. on Tuesday unveiled a new model in its Game Boy line of portable video game players and said its new console would be out in 2006, with downloadable access to 20 years' worth of popular games. Nintendo said the new Game Boy Micro would be released this fall. The device measures four inches by two inches by 0.7 inch, with a silver casing and removable face plates. Those dimensions are about the same as cell phones like the Nokia 3120.

The screen of the Micro will have adjustable brightness levels -- a frequent complaint with past Game Boys was that the screen was not bright enough. It will play all the same games as the current Game Boy Advance SP. Nintendo did not set a price for the Micro. The new console, code-named "Revolution," will offer downloadable access to more than 20 years of games from past Nintendo consoles -- the NES, Super NES and Nintendo 64.

It will support both a new disc format and discs from Nintendo's current console, the GameCube. Nintendo also said it would offer an add-on unit that would let the Revolution play standard DVDs. The console will feature wireless controllers, two USB ports and built-in wireless Internet access. It was not immediately clear how early in 2006 Nintendo planned to release the new console, or what its final name will be. Market leader Sony Corp (SNE.N). plans to release the PlayStation 3 in spring 2006, while Microsoft Corp. is to release the Xbox 360 later this year.
